18 people have appeared in court in connection with a series of garda raids in south Dublin.

A total of 15 men and three women are facing multiple charges including the possession for sale or supply of either heroin or cocaine. They were arrested in raids in Tallaght, Rathfarnham, Clondalkin, Terenure, Crumlin and Rathmines.

Three of those held have been refused bail and all are due to appear again before Tallaght District Court within five weeks.

The arrests were made as part of Garda Operation Fossil, set up to target street dealers in south Dublin.

Heroin, cannabis, cocaine, drug paraphernalia and an air rifle were recovered during the search of over 30 houses in the Tallaght area.

Officers from Tallaght drugs unit and the national drugs unit were both involved in the operation.

Gardaí said some of the operation was focused on mid-ranking drug dealers operating mostly by phone.
