A human rights body has called for the establishment of more schools in Ireland which embrace all faiths or are secular.
The recommendation is contained in a report published today by the European Commission on Racism and Integration.
The report focused on Ireland and makes a number of wide-ranging recommendations.
On education, it urges the Irish authorities to promote the establishment of multi or non-denominational schools and to adopt legislation to provide for this.
It highlights the fact that the vast majority of schools in Ireland are Catholic and says the country's growing diversity has created a demand which the current system is unable to meet.
The report also calls for a system to monitor the performance of pupils from minority groups.
It says the active recruitment of teachers from minority groups and the Travelling community needs to be considered and promoted.
The commission's report also says more needs to be done to help Traveller children to integrate.
