Farmers in Dublin lamb chop giveaway

Lamb giveaway - Free chops

Lamb farmers gathered in Dublin this morning to give away free lamb chops in an effort to highlight the prices they are receiving for their produce.

Dozens of people queued on O'Connell Street for the free lamb, which was being distributed by the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association.

ICSA said it is getting so little when it sells the lamb that it might as well give it away. Farmers say supermarkets are making too much money from lamb and they should get more of the profit.

Retail Ireland, which represents large supermarket chains, defended its position on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland today saying that it costs a lot to bring the lamb from the field to the table.

Last week farmers protested in the centre of Dublin over the importation of lamb from New Zealand.

The demonstration took place outside the premises of Marks and Spencer on Grafton Street.

The Irish Farmers' Association accused the retailer of decimating Irish lamb producers by stocking its shelves with New Zealand lamb when Irish produced products are freely available at what it called a competitive price.
