Political parties have been assessing the result of two opinion polls as the General Election campaign enters it final days.

The surveys published today indicate an increase in support for Fianna Fáil, while both Fine Gael and Labour have slipped in the past week.

The two opinion polls, both with a margin of error of plus or minus 3%, both based on samples of more than 1,000 voters, show a broadly similar picture; a rise in support for Fianna Fáil, and a decrease for Fine Gael and Labour.

The Millward Brown IMS poll for the Sunday Independent was taken on Monday and Tuesday after the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s statement on his financial affairs, but before the televised leaders' debates.

The 11% undecideds were excluded, and the results were weighted to take account of how people said they voted in the last election.

At 37%, Fianna Fáil is up two points since the last IMS poll ten days ago.

Fine Gael are down one to 25%; Labour down one to 12%; the PDs unchanged at 3%; the Greens unchanged at 5%; Sinn Féin down one to 9%; and Independents and others up one to 9%.

The Sunday Business Post poll by Red C was taken on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and showed no significant difference between those polled before and after Thursday night's leaders' debate.

Apart from the exclusion of the 12% undecideds, the figures were not adjusted.

At 36%, Fianna Fáil support is up one, while Fine Gael drops two to 27%, Labour drops one to 11%, the PDs drop one to 2%.

The Greens are up two to 8%, while Sinn Féin enjoys the biggest rise, up three points to 10%, and Independents and others drop two to 6%.
