One of four men convicted for his part in the killing of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe was released from Castlerea Prison in Co Roscommon this morning.
Michael O'Neill from Patrickswell, Co Limerick, had served eight years of his 11-year sentence and had been given standard remission for good behaviour.
Det Garda McCabe was shot dead during a post office raid in Adare in Co Limerick in June 1996.
Mr O'Neill and three others were convicted of manslaughter.
He walked out of Castlerea Prison shortly after 7am and was driven away in a waiting car.
He made no comment to journalists at the scene.
