A new driver safety course for young farmers has been launched.

The pilot initiative will involve a one-day training course on safety and tractor operating skills for young people operating tractors, particularly during silage harvesting.

The Minister for Labour Affairs, Tony Killeen, speaking in Newcastle West, Co Limerick, said he is concerned that agriculture topped the unenviable job league table in 2006.

The industry had the highest number of fatalities of any economic sector, with 18 people losing their lives.

Mr Killeen said the new course will involve a blend of 'theory and practice' and will highlight the key safety skills involved in operating tractors during silage making.

Particular emphasis will be placed on road safety, including use of indicators and warning signs, identifying hazards such as overhead electrical cables, manoeuvring tractors and trailers in farmyards and tipping silage loads.
