A 21-year-old man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court charged with the murder of his 17-year-old sister.

Patrick O'Dwyer of Shrohill, Ennistymon in Co Clare denies murdering Marguerite O'Dwyer at the family home on 29 November 2004.

The jury of six men and six women were told that whether or not Mr O'Dwyer was a person of diminished responsibility at the time of the incident is likely to be a central issue in the trial.

He is one of the first people to be tried since new legislation allowing a defence of diminished responsibility came into force.
