The fate of World Bank chief Paul Wolfowitz is hanging in the balance and will be decided today.
A board meeting is scheduled to take place later today and Wolfowitz's future will be top of the agenda.
The meeting will involve finance ministers from the 24 countries which oversee the bank.
Mr Wolfowitz has been under pressure to quit after admitting helping his partner win a promotion and pay rise.
Although the US continues to support Mr Wolfowitz other nations have questioned his position.
Yesterday, a small number of Bank staff held a protest outside its headquarters in Washington.
A letter writing campaign has also been started.
Britain's International Development Secretary, Hillary Benn, has said the controversy is damaging the organisation.
Mr Wolfowitz was formerly a Deputy Secretary of Defence under President Bush and was one of the chief architects of the Iraq War.
