The HSE has said a new case of TB has been confirmed in Cork, bringing to 11 the number of adults and children diagnosed there over the past month.

All 11 cases - of two adults and nine children - are linked to two crèches, Panda Paws at Little Island and Nurture Childcare in Douglas.

The HSE has stressed that young child TB cases are not infectious or contagious and pose no risk of TB transmission.

In all, over 300 children and adults have been screened in Cork since the first case of TB was notified to the HSE last month.

Risk assessment is continuing and the HSE says the outbreaks are being managed in line with best national and international practice.

Dr Rory Lehane, a GP based at Douglas in Cork, says parents should not be unduly worried.

The BCG is a vaccine against TB. It is routinely offered to all newborn babies throughout the country, except in Cork where it is only administered if parents specifically request it.

However, from next October all babies born there will be offered the vaccine routinely, in line with national guidelines, and parents can also request it if they have concerns between now and then.
