Italian designer Versace and Air France KLM helped make the year-old domain .eu the seventh most common suffix in the world.

2.5 million Europeans and companies have registered with the .eu domain name, according to the European Commission.

Almost 80 percent of them are currently used.

'After just one year, .eu has become a well-established part of Europe's cyberspace," said EU Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding

'This is a positive sign of the attractiveness of electronic commerce within the EU.'

Within the 27-member bloc, only .uk and Germany's .de are more popular than the .eu domain. Worldwide, .com, .net, .org and .info have more registered sites.

The registration process is managed by the independent organisation EURid and charges at least $5-45 depending on whether they are for a private entity, public body, or trademarked name.
