Galway County Councillor Michael Fahy, who was admitted to hospital on the day before he was due to begin a 12-month jail sentence for the misappropriation of council funds, was discharged from hospital this afternoon.

RTÉ News understands that he was to be admitted to a respite care centre in the county this evening.

Cllr Fahy was due to present himself at Loughrea Garda Station last Tuesday to begin his prison sentence.

The 56-year-old farmer and former insurance salesman from Ardrahan underwent a cardiac procedure in University College Hospital Galway last week.
