The International Transport Federation has said Ireland can expect the arrival of more and more ships whose crews are seeking payments and basic working rights.

The ITF's General Secretary, David Cockcroft, said Ireland was now at the forefront of a global battle against the abuse of seafarers.

The strong and effective union representation in Ireland coupled with the enforcement of laws against unscrupulous ship-owners here has resulted in the country establishing a reputation for safeguarding the rights of seafarers.

There have been nearly 40 calls for help from foreign seafarers in Irish ports in the past year.
