The Green Party has published legislation aimed at cleaning up the process by which people are appointed to public bodies, including taskforces, executive boards and advisory bodies.
The party says it wants to put an end to the 'crass cronyism', which it says exists in such appointments.
It says it will be closely watching how other parties in Opposition respond when the Bill is debated in the Dáil tonight and tomorrow.
Finance Spokesperson Dan Boyle said if there is to be a change in Government, 'there has to be a change of culture too'. He said the Greens were not going to be there just to 'make up the numbers'.
The party is proposing an independent merit-based appointment system for the chairpersons and board members of all public bodies.
This included a special unit within the Commission for Public Service Appointments, which would hold open competition to recruit members and a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Appointments to ratify appointments.
It also wants appointments to international organisations, such as the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, to be subject to a Dáil vote.
