The design has been unveiled for the first ever public national memorial to honour members of the Defence Forces who died in service.
The memorial, in Merrion Square in Dublin, will be designed by Brian King following a competition for which over 30 artists applied.
The commission, including construction and installation, is worth €175,000.
The Minister for Defence, Willie O'Dea, said he expects to have the memorial on site by the end of the year.
Mr O'Dea said the memorial will be an appropriate prominent public monument to reflect the sacrifice made by members of the Defence Forces and their families.
He said it is his intention that the annual commemoration for deceased members of the Defence Forces would take place at the National Memorial in future.
