Fine Gael has published proposals to overhaul the Witness Protection Programme to encourage criminals to inform on gang bosses.
The party's Justice Spokesperson, Jim O'Keeffe, said the current scheme, established in 1997, was falling into disuse.
Fine Gael wants the programme put on a statutory footing, with a special Witness Protection Unit established within An Garda Síochána.
