Credit card fraud losses in Northern Ireland have dropped due to the introduction of chip and pin technology in recent years, it has emerged.
The UK payments association, APACS, said the amount lost was reduced to £700,000 last year, down 12% on the £800,000 total in 2005.
A spokesman for Northern Bank said card fraud peaked in 2004 when the figure reached £1.1m.
However, the spokesman warned that criminals are still targeting cards with the aim of copying the magnetic stripe data and using them over the Internet or in countries where chip and pin has not yet been introduced.
