Death of Mayo farmer 'suspicious'

Erris Peninsula - Scene sealed off
Erris Peninsula - Scene sealed off

Gardaí say they are now treating as suspicious the death of a 72-year-old farmer whose body was found on the driveway of his Co Mayo house on Sunday afternoon.

The decision was made after a post mortem examination was carried out last night.

The man was named this morning as John Gaughan from Glosh, Blacksod.

Mr Gaughan lived alone on the southern tip of the Erris Peninsula. He was last seen alive late on Saturday night in the nearby village of Binghamstown where he was socialising in a pub.

Gardaí say they believe he got a lift home after leaving the pub. His body was found on the driveway to his house by a neighbour on Sunday afternoon.

A post mortem examination was carried out at Castlebar General Hospital last night by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

The scene around Mr Gaughan's house still remains sealed off for technical examination and gardaí are continuing to try to establish his last movements.

Supt Joe Gannon, who is heading the investigation, said the latest information surrounding his death would be reviewed today and a decision will be taken on what direction the investigation is likely to take.

Gardaí have asked anyone with information relating to Mr Gaughan's death to contact Belmullet Garda Station on 097-81910.
