Anti-Iraq war protestors have clashed with police in Sydney ahead of the arrival of the US Vice President, Dick Cheney, on a visit to the city today.

Ten people were arrested when 200 protestors were barred from marching through the city to demand that the Prime Minister, John Howard, withdraw troops from Iraq.

Mr Howard has ruled out following Britain's example and cutting troop numbers in Iraq but his unwavering commitment has created a political minefield ahead of an election later this year.

Mr Cheney has visited Guam and Japan as part of the same tour. He will meet Mr Howard on Saturday before leaving on Sunday.

Earlier, the Iraqi President, Jalal Talabani, welcomed yesterday's announcement that Britain is to withdraw a substantial number of troops from southern Iraq.

Mr Talabani said it was a catalyst for Iraqi forces to stand on their own feet.

Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister, Barham Salih, said the move was positive.

The former US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, said the British decision was a step in the right direction for all coalition forces.
