Election candidate facing charges in Clonmel

A Fianna Fáil General Election candidate has appeared before Clonmel district court on a number of charges, including one of assault.

Cllr Mattie McGrath of Newcastle, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, is also charged with threatening to use violence and threatening or abusive behaviour.

He is pleading not guilty to all three charges which refer to an incident that happened in August 2006 in Newcastle, Co Tipperary.

Six other people were also before the court charged with assaulting and using or threatening to use violence; all six are pleading not guilty.

Judge Terence Finn adjourned the case to 8 May in Clonmel to allow for statements.
