A gunman who opened fire in a crowded shopping mall in Utah overnight killed five people and injured several others before being shot dead.
The incident took place at the Trolley Square shopping mall in Salt Lake City at around 6.45pm local time (1.45am Irish time).
Restaurants in the mall were packed with diners at the time.
The man was described as wearing a trench coat and carrying a backpack.
He produced a pump action shotgun and began firing, apparently at random.
An off-duty police officer who was in the mall at the time exchanged gunfire with the man in the main corridor of the mall.
Salt Lake City police officers arrived a short time later and confronted the gunman, killing him when he failed to respond.
A number of people were reported to be in critical condition in local hospitals.
Four dead in Philadelphia
Four men were killed and a fifth was critically wounded in a shooting in an office building in Philadelphia's Navy Yard.
The gunman shot four men, at least one of whom had been bound with rope and tape, killing three of them, according to local media reports.
The fourth victim initially survived the assault and was taken to a local hospital.
The gunman also shot at police, who returned fire. The shooter then killed himself, police said.
A local radio station said the shooting happened during a board meeting for one of the businesses in the Navy Yard Business Center, a new development on the south side of Philadelphia.
