It has been confirmed that the users of two computers in Ireland have been identified as suspects in a worldwide child pornography investigation.

Austria's Interior Ministry said it had smashed a global child pornography ring, which involved over 2,300 suspects in 77 countries.

None of the suspects have been arrested, but Austrian police have discussed the matter with their counterparts in other countries.

It is understood two Irish computers were identified, along with 23 from Austria, 607 from the US, 466 from Germany and 114 French suspects.

Austrian investigators also identified suspects in Algeria, Iceland and Venezuela.

The case arose last July when the operator of a Vienna-based Internet firm notified police that hackers had uploaded suspicious material onto its server.

Eight videos had been uploaded illegally from a London server on to the site of the Austrian company. Some 8,000 viewers logged on to the site in the space of 24 hours before police shut it down and tracked the suspects through their IP addresses.

Austrian police have confiscated 31 computers, seven laptops, 23 external hard drives and more than 2,000 CDs, DVDs and videos containing child pornography material.

The investigation of suspects outside Austria will be conducted by authorities in the countries concerned.
