Italy's Interior Minister Giuliano Amato has said that Italian football stadia which do not meet safety regulations will have to hold matches behind closed doors without spectators.

All league soccer matches in Italy were suspended indefinitely on Friday night after a policeman was killed by rioting fans.

Mr Amato was speaking after talks with the country's football federation, at which new measures were outlined which are aimed at preventing violence.

These include increased police powers and the banning of the block sale of tickets to away fans.

The Italian cabinet is due to discuss the new measures tomorrow. Reports say matches may resume this weekend.
