An investigation is under way into an armed robbery of a security van in Cork city.

An armed robber escaped with what is being described as a substantial amount of cash after he held up a security van at the Douglas Court Shopping Centre in Cork.

The raid happened at 10.45am this morning when a man armed with a handgun approached a Group 4 Securicor employee who was delivering an ATM cashbox to the AIB at the centre.

The robber demanded the refill cashbox and when it was handed over, he escaped on foot in the direction of Rochestown Avenue.

Gardaí believe a car may have been waiting.

The raider is described as being 1.57m (5'9") tall, wearing a baseball cap, a jacket and carrying a blue rucksack.

No shots were fired and no one was injured during the incident.
