Gardaí are now questioning three people in connection with the kidnapping of a Bank of Ireland official and his family last night.

A woman was arrested shortly after 3pm today and is being questioned in Drogheda Garda Station.

Two others, a man in his 20s and a woman in her late teens, were arrested earlier and are being held at Santry and Coolock garda stations.

All three can be held for 72 hours.

It is understood the Assistant Manager of Bank Of Ireland in Balbriggan along with his wife and two sons were held hostage by an armed gang of four at their home in Castlefarm in Swords.

The family were held at a number of locations overnight.

This morning the bank official was ordered to remove a sum of cash from the BOI in Balbriggan and bring it to a drop off point.

The head of the Garda Press Office, Supt Kevin Donohue confirmed that several specialist armed garda units were involved in the operation and that no shots were fired during the arrest at around midday.

Gardaí believe a number of people were involved in the operation and already several cars have been seized.

No weapons were recovered and the significant sum of cash stolen has also not been recovered.

Bank of Ireland has said its priority is for the safety and well-being of the staff and family involved in this incident and all of the bank's support services have been made available to them.

The General Secretary of the Irish Bank Officials Association said today's robbery was the fourth incident of so called 'Tiger Kidnapping' in less than a month and that his members were genuinely concerned for their safety.

Larry Broderick called for the establishment of a joint working group on security in the financial services sector, and said he wanted the Taoiseach to act on the issue.
