Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has called for 'a genuine national debate' on immigration issues.

Speaking at a meeting of his Parliamentary Party in Clontarf this afternoon, Mr Kenny said it was time for a debate on immigration so that Ireland could ensure that the mistakes made in other countries were avoided.

Mr Kenny went on to say that the recent dramatic growth in the rate of immigration into Ireland was resulting in what was arguably the greatest economic and social transformation of the country since independence.

However, the Fine Gael leader stressed that immigrants to Ireland have the responsibility to integrate into the community, comply with laws and respect cultural traditions.

He added that he did not want to see a situation developing in which immigrant populations led separate lives.

Speaking to all 88 Fine Gael candidates for the forthcoming General Election, Mr Kenny said that Irish jobs and the rights of those who come to work in Ireland must be protected.

He also called for the appointment of a Minister of State for Immigrant Affairs who would be attached to the Dept of the Taoiseach.
