The garda sergeant injured in a knife attack in Fermoy, Co Cork in the early hours of yesterday is expected to make a full recovery.

He may be released from hospital by the end of the week.

Sergeant John Liston was one of a number of gardaí who responded to a call after 26-year-old Trevor Clancy, from Pike Road in Fermoy, produced two knives outside a nightclub in the town at 1.20am yesterday.

Mr Clancy stabbed Sgt Liston in the stomach with one of the knives before taking his own life a short time later.

Sgt Liston underwent surgery at Cork University Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí have appealed to people who met Mr Clancy on Saturday, or in the early hours of Sunday, to contact them.
