Disagreement over protection for solicitor

Baiba Saulite - Murdered in Swords

There are conflicting reports about whether or not gardaí provided armed protection for the solicitor of a woman who was shot dead in Dublin last Sunday.

Baiba Saulite, a mother of two from Latvia, was killed as she stood in the hallway of her home at Holywell Square in Swords.

The Law Society has insisted that Ms Saulite's solicitor was given armed garda protection. However, the Garda Commissioner's office said that while the solicitor was given crime prevention advice and received attention from gardaí, at no stage was there a garda operation to provide armed protection for him.

The Director of the Law Society Ken Murphy met Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy to discuss the issue this afternoon.

It is understood Ms Saulite had told her friends and neighbours she was concerned for her safety.

A garda statement on the killing also suggested she appeared to be somewhat in fear of her husband. But gardaí also insist that at no time were they aware of any specific threat against the life of Baiba Saulite.

Meanwhile, Ms Saulite's brother has arrived in Ireland with his wife to organise the repatriation of her body.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, the head of Consular Services at the Latvian embassy in Dublin, Ivars Lasis, said repatriation was still a matter of discussion.

Mr Lasis said the family was devastated by the killing.
