The President, Mary McAleese, joined the Duke of Edinburgh in Scotland this morning to present achievement awards to young people from across the UK and Ireland.
Over 100 teenagers and young adults received Duke of Edinburgh Gold awards today in a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the scheme.
They were joined at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh by recipients of Gaisce awards, the scheme of which Mrs McAleese is Patron.
This afternoon, the President attended a reception to celebrate REEL 2006, the first Scotland-Ireland Film Festival.
The festival, which opened on Saturday 28 October and is to end on Thursday, showcases the best of recent Irish and Scottish film production.
The reception also celebrated the 17th Scottish International Storytelling Festival, which features contributions from Irish story-tellers.
