Gardaí and members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team have recovered the remains of a body at Mangerton Mountain, near Killarney, Co Kerry.
The remains are believed to be of a Swedish student who went missing in the area five days after Christmas, 2004.
22-year-old former Swedish special forces soldier Olof Jansson set out on a trek from Mangerton Mountain to Carrantuohill on 28 December 2004.
He had married three days before Christmas and his disappearance a week later touched hundreds of people who volunteered to take part in the search, co-ordinated by Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and gardai in Killarney.
There were nine rescue teams, eight dog units, five mountaineering clubs, river rescue and diving teams, a Coastguard helicopter, the Civil Defence and park rangers.
In appalling conditions, they attempted to cover an area of 120 square kilometres around the McGillycuddy Reeks and Killarney National Park.
But in spite of their exhaustive efforts, no trace of Olof Jansson was found.
Yesterday a local farmer discovered the remains of a body at the bottom of cliffs at Mangerton.
It is believed to be that of Olof Jansson. However, it may take weeks to confirm the identity of the remains.
