Gardaí in Dundalk say they have seized fireworks worth €15,000 over the past two weeks.

The seizures are part of the ongoing Operation Tombola, which aims to curb the amount of fireworks in circulation in the lead up to Halloween.

Gardaí are liaising with the PSNI to try and stem the illegal importation of fireworks into the Republic, but traders on the Northern side of the border have said demand is the same as in previous years.

Last month, the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell introduced new legislation to penalise those in possession of fireworks without a licence.

It allows for a five-year jail term and fines of up to €10,000.
