The former DUP Mayor of Coleraine, Dessie Stewart, is reported to have punched a photographer outside a courthouse in Co Antrim.
Mr Stewart allegedly threw a punch at the Press Association photographer as he arrived at the court. The photographer reported the incident to the police.
The PSNI has said it is investigating allegations of assault.
In September, Mr Stewart admitted four counts of pretending to be someone else in order to cast postal votes, and two of fraudulently stopping free exercise of a proxy vote.
The case was then adjourned for pre-sentence reports.
However, at Antrim court this afternoon, sentencing was put back until 17 November because of what the judge said were outstanding factual issues which needed to be resolved.
Mr Stewart, who has already resigned from Coleraine Council, has also left the DUP.
The charges relate to the last Westminster and local government elections, which were held on the same day in May 2005.
