A US court has sentenced the former Enron chief executive, Jeffrey Skilling, to more than 24 years in prison for his part in the financial scandal that brought down the global energy giant.

Enron, which had been one of the largest companies in the US, collapsed into bankruptcy five years ago when news of fraudulent activity emerged.

Last May, Skilling and the late Enron founder, Ken Lay, were found guilty of defrauding investors by using off-the-books deals to hide debt and inflate profits.

Lay, who was 64, died of a heart attack in July.

Skilling, 52, has said he was innocent of the charges and will appeal.
