Corrib, Co Mayo - More protests at terminal site

There were further protests at the Corrib gas terminal site in Co Mayo this morning.

Up to 100 members of the Shell to Sea campaign, who are opposing the construction of the €200 million terminal, staged a sit-down protest on a road leading to the site and had to be removed by gardaí.

They jeered and heckled a convoy taking construction workers to the site at a crossroads, 2km from the main entrance.

The convoy was delayed for about 20 minutes as a large force of gardaí was brought to the scene.

During a confrontation the protestors were lifted from the centre of the road and the convoy was allowed through.

There were further protests as fleets of haulage trucks made their way to the site.

The Shell to Sea campaign group has said it will continue its campaign against the building of the terminal because it believes it poses unacceptable health and safety risks to the area.
