A man has gone on trial accused of murdering an 82-year-old man who had allowed him to stay in his flat.

Ian Kinahan, 37, admitted the manslaughter of Michael Creighton between 31 August and 4 September 2005, but denies murder.

Mr Creighton used to allow Mr Kinahan to stay in his flat in Castle Street in Mullingar and may also have helped him financially.

The 82-year-old was found dead in his flat with his hands and feet tied and 18 multiple rib fractures to his chest.

It is not known how long he was lying tied up before he died.

The prosecution said it believes the motive for the attack was to steal Mr Creighton's bank card, as six unsuccessful attempts were made to withdraw cash from his account.

The trial is continuing before a jury of 11 men and one woman in the Central Criminal Court.
