The trial of two sisters accused of killing their mother's Kenyan boyfriend and disposing of his body has opened in Dublin.

The body of 38-year-old Sheilila Salim, who was also known as Farah Swaleh Noor, was found in the Royal Canal in Dublin on 30 March last year.

The court was told he had suffered 22 stab wounds.

31-year-old Linda Mulhall and her 28-year-old sister Charlotte have pleaded not guilty to murder.

In his opening statement for the prosecution, George Birmingham SC, said that Mr Salim was a Kenyan who passed himself off as a Somalian, using the name of Farah Swaleh Noor.

He was in a relationship with Catherine Mulhall, the mother of the two accused.

Mr Birmingham told the jury that the relationship was fraught and stormy and that Mr Salim was violent towards Ms Mulhall.

Mr Birmingham told the jury that following initial denials, Linda and Charlotte Mulhall subsequently admitted their involvement in the killing and disposal of Mr Salim's body.
