The garda siege of a house in Gort, Co Galway, where an armed man had been resisting calls to leave his home, has ended.
Gardaí have confirmed that one live round of ammunition was fired at the man who had barricaded himself in a house in Galway.
At 8:20pm this evening the man left the house, off Crowe Street, and fired a number of shots in the direction of gardaí.
In response the gardaí fired a number of non-lethal beanbag rounds, which failed to disable the man.
A live round was then fired at the man hitting him in the chest-shoulder area.
Gardaí say the man is in a stable condition at University College Hospital in Galway and his injuries are not life threatening.
The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell has said the outcome to the stand-off underlines the difficulties faced by members of the Garda Síochána in dealing with such situations.
Mr McDowell said he commends the efforts of the gardaí to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.
Negotiations with a man, who had been holding out in a house since around 11pm last night, begun around 5:30pm this evening.
The area surrounding the house had been sealed off, and trained negotiators were called in.
Last night, several shots were fired from the house and at least one garda patrol car was damaged. No one was injured.
Superintendent Kevin Donohue, who is at the scene, says he is sure the man did not mean to harm anyone.
The man is thought to be in his 40s and has two licensed firearms.
