Michael McDowell has been formally appointed Tánaiste.
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, signed the document appointing him successor to Mary Harney shortly after 10am this morning.
The two men met this morning for private discussions before the regular weekly Cabinet meeting.
Last week, Mary Harney stepped down after 13 years as leader of the Progressive Democrats. On Monday, Mr McDowell was confirmed as her replacement.
