Two charged over Dublin city assault

Two men have appeared in court in Dublin charged in connection with an attack on a young man which left him on a life support machine.

19-year-old Michael Carroll of Lower Dominick St and 23-year-old Anthony Carroll of St Attracta's Road, Cabra, who are not said to be related, were charged with assault causing serious harm to Liam McGowan.

Michael Carroll was remanded in custody to appear in court again tomorrow, while Anthony Carroll is due in court again next week.

Mr McGowan, 22, from Kinlough, Co Leitrim, was also robbed during the attack in the city two weeks ago.

He was hit on the back of the head in Dublin city centre as he made his way back to his flat.

His mobile phone and €40 in cash were taken from him.

He was taken to the Mater Hospital but was transferred to the intensive care unit at Beaumont Hospital where his family are keeping a vigil by his bedside.
