The young Austrian woman, Natascha Kampusch, who was held captive for eight years, has told how the thought of escaping kept her alive.
Ms Kampusch, who is now 18, was kidnapped while on the way to school aged ten and held in a house near Vienna.
In her first television interview, broadcast on the Austrian public television channel ORF, she said she feared escaping might provoke her kidnapper to kill her and others in a murder spree.
Her captor killed himself shortly after her escape two weeks ago.
For her future, she said she hoped to continue her education and study journalism, law or psychology.
She also recalled her despair at being kept in the dark basement room in her captor's house.
