Two due in court over Dublin city assault

Two men are to appear in court tomorrow charged in connection with an attack in which another young man was put on a life support machine.

22-year-old Liam McGowan from Kinlough in Co Leitrim was hit on the back of the head in Dublin city centre two weeks ago as he made his way back to his flat.

His mobile phone and €40 in cash were also taken from him.

He was taken to the Mater Hospital but was transferred to the intensive care unit at Beaumont Hospital where his family is keeping a vigil by his bedside.

This morning detectives from Mountjoy and Fitzgibbon Street arrested two men in Dominick Street and Cabra.

The two, aged 20 and 23, were questioned all day at Store Street and Mountjoy Stations.

This evening they were charged with assault causing serious harm.

Gardaí will detain them overnight before bringing them before the Dublin District Court tomorrow morning.
