Police are investigating the murder of a 36-year-old man who was beaten to death after being chased through a housing estate in Co Down.

His body was found on a road at Owenroe Drive in the Kilcooley estate in Bangor last night.

A forensic examination of the scene is being carried out.

Police forensic teams spent this morning searching two crime scenes on the estate.

It appears the victim was confronted by his killer or killers in an alleyway close to the entrance to the development, and a verbal altercation ensued.

He was then pursued through the estate for close to 100 yards and was later found dead along the main arterial route known as Owenroe Drive.

The victim has been named locally as Mark Christie who was from the town. It is believed he was well known both locally and to police in the town.

Kilcooley is a loyalist stronghold and paramilitary flags fly from a number of houses in the estate, but it is not yet known if paramilitaries were involved in the killing.

Police are due to give more details of the murder and make a further appeal for witnesses later today.
