Groups working with the elderly say more money needs to be put into addressing the needs of the aging population.

The renewed calls for more Government funding comes after an inquest heard that an elderly Dublin woman was undiscovered for two weeks after falling at her home.

Neighbours of the 77-year-old have disputed claims that Mary O'Reilly spent two weeks trying to get help after her fall last May.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's News At One, Niamh Macken, Co-ordinator of Friends of the Elderly, said her group was shocked and horrified by Ms O'Reilly's tragic story.

However, Ms Macken added that such incidents are becoming all too common.

'There are larger and larger numbers of isolated older people who have lost essential social contact and are in danger of this happening,' she said.

She called for people to be vigilant and to call into elderly neighbours who may be ill or who may just be feeling lonely.
