The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, has said there appears to be very disturbing features surrounding the killing yesterday morning of the prisoner Gary Douch in Mountjoy Prison.
The prisoner's body was found in the cell he was sharing with six other prisoners. He had been moved to the ground floor cell after asking for protection.
Minister McDowell has offered his sympathy to Mr Douch’s family. He said a number of inquiries have now been established to try to get to the bottom of what happened.
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old man questioned yesterday in connection with the murder has been returned to the prison on remand. A file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
