18-year-old to face charges over Clare deaths

An 18-year-old is to be extradited from England today to face charges in connection with a road traffic accident in which two teenage girls from Co Clare were killed.

David Naughton faces two charges of dangerous driving, causing the death of 13-year-old Lorna Mahoney and 16-year-old Stacy Haugh, both from Kilkee in Co Clare.

They were passengers in a car being driving by Mr Naughton on 17 October 2003, when it went out of control at the seafront in Carrigaholt, killing them both.

Mr Naughton, from Galway, was just 15 at the time of the collision.

He was initially remanded in custody and later granted bail, but subsequently fled the jurisdiction.

A bench warrant was issued for him when he failed to appear in court in Ennis in February 2004.

He is due to complete a sentence in London today and two officers from Co Clare are travelling to Heathrow Airport to arrest him on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued by courts in Ireland.

They will return him to Kilrush, Co Clare, to face charges in the district court tomorrow.
