The Irish seafood industry will be the first in Europe to benefit from a revolutionary new technology for freezing and chilling fresh foods, under a trade agreement signed this morning in Tokyo.
The agreement involving Enterprise Ireland, the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education and ABI Japan was signed as part of the week-long Irish trade mission to Japan and China led by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin.
Described as the most significant advancement in refrigeration in 100 years, CAS technology uses natural magnetic energy to enhance the freezing process.
The manufacturers say this guarantees chilled and frozen food products return to their original state once thawed.
ABI has spent the last 35 years perfecting the system and only launched it in the Japanese market in the past five years.
Under this morning’s agreement, ABI will supply the technology to the Grimsby Institute in England which will work in partnership with Enterprise Ireland in developing and implementing the system in the Irish seafood sector.
It is expected the first system will be operational within nine months.
