Call for greater protection of taxpayers

The Chief Executive of the Irish Taxation Institute, Mark Redmond, has called for the establishment of an independent individual or entity with responsibility for the protection of taxpayers' rights.

It follows the publication of a poll which found that many taxpayers don't know what tax breaks they are entitled to, and they are losing out on tens of millions of euro a year.

The Sunday Business Post poll, which surveyed more than 1,000 PAYE taxpayers, showed that two in five taxpayers are not confident that they understand the system.

Almost 50% said they do not know all the reliefs they are entitled to.

The most unpopular taxes, according to the poll, were duties paid on petrol and Vehicle Registration Tax.
