A Garda investigation is under way into the theft of a taxi in Dublin early this morning which has left a man critically ill in hospital.

Six men were picked up by taxi in Inchicore village and driven towards the city. A fight broke out between two of the men and the taxi driver removed them from his cab.

While this was happening another passenger stole the taxi which crashed in a single vehicle collision at 2am.

There were four people in the vehicle when it turned over at the junction of Cherry Orchard Avenue and Croftwood Crescent.

The injured man received serious arm and head injuries.  Another man is also being treated in hospital, but his injuries are not life-threatening. Both are described as in their early 20s.

The other two had their names taken by Gardaí, but were not arrested.
