Two men have appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Limerick in connection with the death of a man whose body was found under one of the city bridges on Thursday night.

Thomas Ryan of Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty and Tony O'Brien whose address was given as Baker Place were both charged with assaulting Keith Ryan causing him harm at Fernbank, O'Callaghan Strand in Limerick on Thursday.

The men, both in their 20s, were granted free legal aid and were remanded in custody until next Wednesday.

Keith Ryan, who is from the Farronshone area of Limerick, was found dead under Shannon Bridge on Thursday night. He had suffered injuries to the head.

A third man who was also arrested in connection with the investigation was due to appear in court charged in relation to an outstanding warrant.

It is the second violent death being investigated by Limerick gardaí in just over two weeks.

19-year-old Aidan Kelly from Moyross was shot dead in a laneway at Blackwater in Co Clare on 10 May.
