A new study has found there is no evidence Irish workers have been displaced from jobs by the arrival of people from the ten EU accession countries.

The study was carried out by the Economic and Social Research Institute and researchers in Sweden.

There have been controversies about Ireland's move to open its borders to people from the accession states. There were fears it could result in so-called welfare tourists, where people come to Ireland to enjoy better entitlements.

But the report says that people who come from the ten accession countries who could not get work generally left Ireland.

The study found 90% of the people who come to Ireland are in the workforce. Most of the rest are dependants like children.

183,000 people from the accession states have taken PPS numbers since May 2004 which entitles them to benefits. But that has had little effect on unemployment, the report finds.
