The US military says it has quelled a violent disturbance at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.
A military spokesman said the trouble broke out on Thursday when several inmates staged an apparent suicide attempt to lure guards into a room.
A military spokesperson said the guards were attacked by a group of prisoners armed with weapons made from fans and light fixtures.
Six inmates were reportedly hurt in the incident. Earlier, two real suicide bids occurred when two inmates tried to kill themselves with prescribed drugs.
There have been 41 suicide attempts by 25 different prisoners at Guantanamo since it opened, according to the commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo, Harry Harris.
One inmate has tried to kill himself 12 times.
Meanwhile, a United Nations committee has said the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo amounts to torture.
Civilian lawyers who have visited the camp say there is widespread depression among the approximately 460 inmates, most of whom have been held for more than four years without charge.
The camp was opened in early 2002 to hold 'enemy combatants' after the 'war on terror' was declared in response to the 11 September, 2001 attacks on the US.
